Oral Cavity & the Body

Dr. Matz and Rayna at Arbor View Dental in Portland, OR
The most obvious link between the oral cavity and the rest of the body is that the oral cavity is the body's entry port for nutrients. But it's also an area for toxins and microbes. If it functions poorly due to bad teeth, decreased saliva, compromised anti-microbial defenses (tonsils removed, low levels of digestive enzymes), the rest of the body is compromised, because it must then assume these functions. Anything absorbed through the oral cavity immediately gets into the blood and lymphatic systems.

The oral cavity can also foster many pathological microorganisms. If these microbes grow unchecked under the gums (periodontal disease), within the teeth (abscesses) or in a hole in the jaw (cavitation or NICO) they produce an ongoing source of infection carried by the blood and lymph to the next of the body. Oral microbes cultured from around the body have shown to be risk factors in heart disease, strokes, and diabetes.

Dental materials such as fluoride, amalgam fillings, and nickel used in crowns, partial dentures, and orthodontic appliances introduces toxicity and electric current into the body. These currents and toxins each effect health in various ways depending on factors in the body. They can lead to compromised health and chronic degenerative diseases. At Arborview Dental, no amalgams, fluoride, nickel etc. is used. Some individuals exhibit atypical health complications or sensitivities. It's recommended for patients to have Material Compatibility Testing. These clinical tests analyze a patient's unique immunological record revealing the chemical compounds against which antibodies have been formed. With this information, Dr. Matz can make an informed decision about the dental materials chosen that most meets the needs of the patients.

Dr. Matz will work with your MD, Naturopath, Chiropractor, Acupuncturist, and other medical advisor to provide the most optimal, compatible dental care.

Additional Information on Biological Dentistry

Non-Amalgam Restoration

Arbor View Dental does not use mercury fillings. Our office will use alternative materials such as porcelain, composite, or gold to fill teeth. We give patients referrals for compatibility testing for individuals that would like to find suitable materials for crowns, fillings, and anesthetics. These tests are done in corroboration with a naturopath or we will use a compatibility testing company. The results are given to us where we will then use the materials that are the best for you.

Air Filtration

We have several Austin air cleaners that contain high-leveled HEPA filtering media. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Arresting, capturing 99.97% of all particles larger than .3 microns. This keeps our office air healthy and fresh, eliminating allergens and germs that can be harmful to the environment, complementing our holistic ideal.

Mercury Protocol

Due to the highly toxic nature of mercury fillings, Arbor View Dental will do a procedure called mercury protocol for the benefit of the patient while taking out these volatile restorations. Arbor View Dental uses a rubber dam, oxygen, and several suctions during removals to reduce exposure to mercury fillings. Fillings are removed in a manner to minimize inhalation of mercury dust. We highly recommend removal of mercury from the soft tissue of the body (ie. brain) by chelating. This is a process usually performed by a MD, Naturopath, or PhD.

Materials & Medicines

Arbor View Dental uses a variety of biocompatible materials for dental comfort and treatment. One homeopathic product we use called Trameel, is an anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Trameel contains the following ingredients: Belladonna 3X, Arnica Montana radix 3X, Aconitum napellus 3X, Chamomilla 1X, Symphytum officinale 4x, Calendula officinalis 1X, Hamamelis virginina 1X, Mellefolium 1X, Hepar sulphuris calcareum 8X, Mercurius solubilis 8X, Hypericum perforatum 6X, Bellis perennis 1X, Echinacea augustifolia 1X, and Echinacea pururea 1X.

Arnica Montana is a natural homeopathic remedy we give to patients in oral pill form, to help reduce post-operative bruising and swelling. It is grown in mountain regions. Arnica Montana promotes healing, lessening pain and discomfort during recovery process.
