Bruxism


Consistent teeth-grinding or jaw-clenching is known as bruxism. Many people are unaware that they may suffer from bruxism, but it affects 30 to 40 million people in the United States alone.
If you have any of the following symptoms, then you may be experiencing bruxism:
•  Tight or painful jaw muscles
•  Damaged teeth or dental restorations
•  A grinding sound at night (this may be noticed by someone who shares a room with you while you sleep)
•  Contractions of jaw muscles
•  A small morning headache
•  Swelling of the lower jaw

There are several causes of bruxism. Many patients grind their teeth during stressful situations, whether it be a new job or a death in the family. It can also be your body’s response to misaligned teeth or certain medications. Certain people only grind their teeth while they sleep. This is known as nocturnal or sleep-related bruxism.

Bruxism can lead to issues with your temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ connects your bottom jaw to your skull, allowing you to speak and chew, etc. If you notice any pain or difficulty with you TMJ, it may be related to bruxism.

Diagnosis of Bruxism


Grinding your teeth together can cause the outer layers of you enamel to wear away, and make your teeth more sensitive. If you are experiencing any of this symptoms, you should come to Arbor View Dental, so we can determine if you suffer from bruxism and how to best treat it.

Dr. Matz will ask you a series of questions about your general dental health, medications you take, sleep habits, and any stress you may have in your life. Then, he will examine you to look for any evidence of grinding. He will look for chipped teeth, tight or tender jaw muscles, any misalignments you may have in your bite. If we suspect you may have bruxism related to dental problems, you will receive a more detailed exam where X-rays may be taken.

Prevention and Treatment of Bruxism


The good news is, bruxism can be easy to prevent and treat. The usual method of treatment is reducing stress. You can try certain relaxation techniques or cut down on stimulants such as caffeine. Anything that will relieve tension and reduce your chances of clenching your jaw.

If you want to prevent bruxism, we usually recommend you wear a night bite plate. This barrier will make it physically impossible for your teeth to grind, although there may be an adjustment period. We also recommend hot compresses on your jaw muscles to help relieve tightness and pain.

If your bruxism is related to dental problems, will need to correct your tooth alignment. This can involve some procedures, but you will typically be given a mouth guard for sleep. In severe cases, we may even need to fabricate inlays, onlays, or crowns to help correct the bite.

If your bruxism is a side effect of certain medications, will discuss your options. You will either have to switch to another medication, or we will give you one to combat the bruxism.
