Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
Portland, OR

woman suffering from TMJ pain, dentist douglas matz portland or
Do you often wake up with jaw pain, or notice a tightness or clicking within your jaw? This is often attributed to your temporomandibular joint, also known as your TMJ. This joint is like a hinge for your skull and your bottom jaw, allowing them to connect and work together each time you open your mouth to speak, yawn, or chew. A disorder in this joint can be painful and even make controlling your jaw more difficult. If you are struggling with pain in your TMJ, contact us today. We will set up a consultation between you and Dr. Matz, so he can help you get some relief.

Sign of a TMJ Problem

Most people experience pain when their TMJ is acting up. It can be localized to the joint right at the hinge, or it can be radiating out from the jaw down into the teeth, back into the ear, or up into the head. A large number of people with a TMJ disorder also note a clicking or popping in their jaw during repetitive movements like chewing gum or yawning consecutive times. If your jaw is feeling stiff, like it is locked into a specific position, this can also be a sign that you need to have your TMJ checked out.

Causes of TMJ Pain

There are quite a few problems that could lead to TMJ pain. It could be due to an injury you once had to the jaw, or even something like arthritis. Sometimes genetics plays a role in who will experience pain, and who will not. Some people struggle with bruxism, which is where they grind or clench their teeth, often at night where they don’t even know they are doing it. This can also lead to TMJ pain. While your pain may be from a single cause, it could also be a combination of all of these factors.

Ways of Relieving TMJ Pain

Some pain in your TMJ is temporary and can be managed on your own. This can be done by staying relaxed and keeping stress away, by massaging the joint, and by avoiding any clenching or grinding of your teeth. Since this doesn’t often happen consciously, it can be difficult to control. Coming in to see us can give you some relief as well because we can do tests to determine what is causing your TMJ pain.

If we can narrow down the cause, the treatment is far easier to come by. We may need to try a few different methods to bring you relief, but we won’t stop until we find something that helps alleviate your pain. We have bite guards and splints that can be used to stabilize your jaw an give you relief day or night. When you come to see us at , we work hard to give you relief from TMJ issues.

To find out what may be causing pain in your TMJ, call us at (503) 465-4848. We can help narrow down what is causing the problem, and figure out what can be done to help bring you some relief.
