Gum Disease

woman with pain from gum disease, Dentist Douglas Matz Portland ORGum disease is a common dental condition. It is a problem and something we at Arbor View Dental can help with. Gum disease accounts for most tooth loss in adults. Do you have gum disease? You can spot the early signs of this periodontal disease, signs include gum bleeding when you brush or floss, and gums that are swollen or inflamed. It is not normal for your gums to bleed when flossing, it is a sign of inflammation. If you do not have this treated, it will continue to worsen. Some patients report other signs including bad breath, sensitivity or pain when chewing.

Causes of Gum Disease

Gum disease develops from the same bacteria that causes tooth decay. When this bacteria goes below the gumline and rests, it causes an infection that will then eat away at the bond between your teeth and gums. This is known as pockets. When the bond between your teeth and gums is eaten away it forms these pockets, and this is the first step to losing your teeth. Without treatment your teeth now shift around in your mouth, effecting your bite, and eventually, they will fall out. At Arbor View Dental, we want your teeth to last you a lifetime. Dr. Matz can help. Gum disease is not something that can be cured, it is maintained. With proper personal hygiene and regular visits to our Portland office, Arbor View Dental, we can help.

Some patients may have additional risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing gum disease. The risk factors include:

•  health issues including diabetes or heart disease.
•  hormone changes, including during pregnancy.
•  smoking, which lowers your ability to fight bacteria.
•  medications, which can lower your ability to fight bacteria.

How do we help prevent gum disease?

First Dr. Matz needs to evaluate the extent of your gum disease. Treatment may be as simple as a dental cleaning, or a more involved deep cleaning including scaling and root planing. Dr. Matz may ask you to come for frequently for a dental cleanings. Dr, Matz may prescribe a medication or fluoride treatment. Dr, Matz will first control the infection, and then we can proceed to repair any damage.
